Saam gaang (2002) also known as: Three, 3 Extremes II, San geng, Three Extremes 2
INFO IMDb
Directed by: Peter Chan (segment "Going Home") (as Peter Ho-Sun Chan) | Ji-woon Kim (segment "Memories") | Nonzee Nimibutr (segment "The Wheel")
This Asian triptych sees the collaboration of three prominent directors from three different countries maximising the appeal of Tartan's Asia Extreme label. Director's Kim Jee-Woon (South Korea), Nonzee Nimibutr (Thailand), and Peter Ho-Sun Chan (Hong Kong) each provide a segment in this trio of spooky stories.

Sam gang yi (2004) also known as: Three... Extremes, Nosiri trilogia, Three Monster
INFO IMDb
Directed by: Fruit Chan (segment "Dumplings"), Takashi Miike (segment "Box"), Chan-wook Park (segment "Cut")
"Three... Extremes" (2004) collects directors from Hong Kong, Korea and Japan to make horror films, each about 40 minutes long. Here the theme is horror, and by horror I don't mean the Hollywood routine of shock, blood and special effects. These films are deeply, profoundly creepy.
The first one, "Dumplings," may be unwatchable for some people when they figure out what's actually going on. There could be walk-outs. Some of those who wait until the end may wish they'd left with the others; the movie's closing image is depraved on a scale that might have shocked the surrealists. I say this not in opposition but simply as an observation. All three short films are examples of the Extreme Asia movement, which began as a programming category at film festivals and seems to be expanding into a genre. The point is to push beyond the worn-out devices of traditional horror films, to essentially abandon the supernatural and move into horror that has its expression in the dreads and traumas of nightmare. "Three" (2002) was the first Extreme Asia trilogy, and now here are three more.

Gaau ji (2004) also known as: Dumplings: Three Extremes, Gaudzi, Dumplings
INFO IMDb
Director: Fruit Chan
Originally released as a short film on the "Three…Extremes" DVD and as such screened at BIFFF 2005, it was now shown at the Cinema Novofestival in a reworked 91 minutes version. And it is surely not a copy or and extended version of this short take. Sure the basic idea behind it all stays the same and even the plot is the same, but the approach to the story is quite different and the inclusion of some new scenes, as well as some changes in the narrative are quite nice. Another good point in favour of director Fruit-Chan is the fact that the full-length feature is never dragging along or never feels like an extended version.

"Originally a part of the "Three...Extremes" short films collection, this is the long feature-film version of Fruit Chan's "Dumplings", which was simultaneously filmed. It has some seriously shocking and disturbing scenes that will surely go down in the books, but they are not scary per se.
No woman can resist the temptation of potential rejuvenation - for some it's a dreamy blissful chase; for others a never-ending nightmare of endless pursuit. Mei's dumplings claim to deliver the goods. I felt that "Dumplings" is the superior film when it boils down to it. No doubt about it.
