Paul Revere & The Raiders - Here They Come! (1965)
EAC, WavPack image, CUE+LOG - 233 MB | MP3 320 CBR - 93 MB | Complete 600dpi JPG artwork
Rock | 1965 Columbia (1999 Sony reissue) | 5% recovery record | Source: My CD

It took Columbia Records two years after signing Paul Revere & the Raiders to release this label-debut LP. In the interim, the group had released a string of singles that were only regional successes in the Northwest. Producer Bob Johnston had taken them into the studio to try to recreate their dynamic live show before an invited audience, but Columbia sat on the results until the group's coming residency on ABC-TV's Where the Action Is prompted this release. The first side of the album displays the Raiders as the raucous club band they were, grinding through R&B dance tunes like "You Can't Sit Down" and "Oo Poo Pah Doo." The second side previews their evolution into more of a pop group in the mid-'60s, although with songs like "Fever," it still retains something of their early R&B flavor.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird: The Movie & Tribute Tour (2001)

Occasionally, companies will throw consumers a bone and give them a good value. Artisan Home Entertainment has done this with 2001's Lynyrd Skynyrd DVD double feature Freebird: The Movie and Tribute Tour. Both of these videos appear on DVD for the first time, and this low-priced, two-for-one disc exceeding three hours' playing time is a treasure. The DVD is not perfect -- the menu is clumsy and you can't access songs individually -- but these two videos existing in the digital domain is what's important. 1996's Freebird: The Movie captures the full glory of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd before the 1977 plane crash. Three concerts yielded the terrific live footage, primarily Knebworth Fair in Hertfordshire, England, on August 21, 1976, but also Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ, on July 13, 1977, and A Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA, on July 4, 1977. The incendiary version of "Free Bird" was filmed in Oakland.

Private Eyes solidified Hall & Oates' status as one of the most popular acts in America in the early '80s, and with 1982's H2O, they capitalized on its success, delivering an album that turned out to be bigger than its predecessor, as it climbed higher on the charts and launched three Top Ten singles with "Maneater," "One on One," and "Family Man."...

Cat Stevens - Matthew & Son (1967)
Rock | 1cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Deram 820 560-2 | rel: 1988 | 240Mb

Cat Stevens' Matthew & Son was among the handful of releases that introduced Decca Records' "offbeat"-oriented (but ultimately largely psychedelic/progressive) Deram label in England. Actually, Stevens' "I Love My Dog" launched the label in fine style by climbing to number 27 on the U.K. charts, and its follow-up, "Matthew & Son," hit number two, resulting in the release of the original album of the same name. The latter was not only a fine account of Stevens' early folk-influenced pop/rock sound, but was also a beautiful, candid audio "snapshot" of one side of Swinging London's musical ambience in late 1966 and early 1967.

Trioscapes - Digital Dream Sequence (2014)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 42:00 min | 101 MB
Genre: Jazz, Progressive Rock, Fusion | Label: Metal Blade Records

Music that lies at the intersection of jazz and metal has always interested me. The first Trioscapes album that came out not long ago in 2012, called Separate Realities, certainly scratched that itch. What excited me the most about the record was that it certainly seemed like only the beginning of where they could go with their sound, if they followed their heads.

Frogg Café are a Long Island quintet who started off as a Zappa cover band, named Lumpy Gravy. Their material is a strong slice of uniquely American prog, an innovative blend of Zappa featuring Mahavishnu-like violin, Chicago-style brass choirs and hints of Univers Zero. Their music alternates from light, airy piano and violin parts to darker, intense guitar passages, creating a dynamic contrast; the use of the trumpet also adds interesting tonal colours. The band have a reputation for putting on a killer live show so this first live double album from them is welcomed indeed. Andy Sussman, the bass player: "This is a true representation of the energy of our music...

Rock / Rock & Roll / Blues Rock

Only in the 70's could a 'motion picture soundtrack' be made for a non-existent movie! The then-newly appointed Rolling Stones guitarist decided to try something a little different on his third solo release overall, so he rounded up yet another all star cast of rockers - something Wood seems inclined to do with each solo album. Present were some of his ex-bandmates in the Faces (Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones, Ian McLagan), as well as such other rock notables as Rick Grech (ex-Blind Faith) and a few Stones sidemen (pianist Ian Stewart and horn-blowers Jim Price and Bobby Keys). Comprised of both instrumentals and actual songs, MAHONEY'S LAST STAND remains the most curious of Wood's solo releases.

B.J. Thomas (born Billy Joe Thomas) straddled the line between pop/rock and country, achieving success in both genres in the late '60s and '70s. At the beginning of his career, he leaned more heavily on rock & roll, but by the mid-'70s, he had turned to country music, becoming one of the most successful country-pop stars of the decade.
