The title says it all: Although not steeped in heavy metal riffs or gothic sound effects, this 1976 effort from Grand Funk Railroad creates a mood gloomy enough to rival the darkest moments of Black Sabbath...

The state of Texas had a burgeoning AOR underground throughout the 1980's, perhaps the most famous artist being multi-instrumentalist Michael Morales whose first album spawned several US hit singles. Not as well known, but equally deserving of attention are Nightwork who released their eponymous album in 1986.

V.A. - The Letters: An Unconventional Italian Guide to King Crimson (2004)
EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks+.cue+log) - 1,11 GB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 440 MB | Covers - 20 MB
Genre: Progressive Rock | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Mellow Records (MMP 460 ABC)

This is three-CD compilation released by Mellow Records as a King Crimson tribute. Among the performers are some of the most prominent contemporary progressive bands, with a wide variety ranging from the old-fashioned spaghetti-prog of Germinale or Malibran to the jazzcore ardour of Anatrofobia and Caboto. Some of the cover versions are quite calligraphic while others reshape the compositions more deeply (Nema Niko and Comfort bring in some electronica, Mariposa show their chamber-punk attitude - and their awful English pronounciation, Mosaic Orchestra almost have a fanfare sound), but they're all substantially faithful and well-played, with many great renditions and a very good overall result.

Maneige - Libre Service - Self-Service (1978) [Remastered 2006]

Following the success of "Ni Vent... Ni Nouvelle", Maneige records another studio album featuring a similar style of fusion, 1978's "Libre service - Self-service". What results is a logical follow-up to the previous release’s amalgamation of fusion, funk and progressive that characterizes this era in the band's history. This CD reissue contains the 10 original tracks which have been recently remastered, plus bonus live material culled from this same era (featured on the 1979 album “Composite”), as well as a 12-page booklet full of photos.

Soft Rock / Jazz-Rock

Although commercially successful, Chicago's previous long-player, Chicago VI (1973), had not been received as warmly from both the critics as well as from some bandmembers. Both parties expressed their dissatisfaction with the lighter fare and significantly shorter material. In response, the combo briefly returned to their previously tried and true methodology on their follow-up album....

Vinyl LP | Nasoni 031 | Stoner Rock | Rotterdam · Netherlands

In the modern hard rock and metal scene there is a new trend to hearken back to the days of yore and take the stylings of the psychedelic bands from the late 60's/early 70's. 3 Speed Automatic is no exception. Laden with enough heavy blues influenced power trio sound to even turn the ear of the most die hard fans of Cream, Blue Cheer and the other gods of the hippie rock past as well.

Along with Lucifer's Friend, Blackwater Park, and other bands even more obscure, Epitaph were members of a curious fraternity of '70s German bands that featured British singers. Founded in Dortmund in late 1969 by vocalist/guitarist Cliff Jackson and his compatriot James McGillivray, plus locally bred bassist Bernd Kolbe, … Epitaph finally re-emerged with 1979's Return to Reality album. Now pursuing a semi-heavy metal angle, this edition of Epitaph recorded two more, poorly received LPs …

Theory Of A Deadman - Savages (2014)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 00:46:48 | 108 MB
Genre: Hard Rock | Label: Roadrunner Records (Warner)

Savages is heralded by the fiery single, "Drown," produced by longtime collaborator Howard Benson (Halestorm, My Chemical Romance). Tyler Connolly, vocalist and guitarist of Theory Of A Deadman commented, "We went back to where we belong on this record, back to the angst, back to the darkness. We veered off the road a bit on this one but it took us right to where we needed to be." Connolly expanded further on the band's inspiration behind "Drown" stating, " "Drown" is about being alone, the feeling of being washed away and left to your own devices. We ve all felt that way at some point in our lives; unable to stay afloat, we sink to the bottom which always seems easier in the end than fighting your way back to the surface."

Terese Taylor - At Your Mercy Circuit (2014)
Indie Rock, Alternative, Southern Rock, Singer-Songwriter | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 48:25 min | ~114 MB
Label: Self Released | Tracks: 12 | Rls.date: 2014

Terese Taylor’s music describes a personal world – or maybe series of worlds – that is dark, stark and cynical. Or perhaps, she is simply laying reality out in front of us as she sees it and letting us interpret her images through our own lens. Or maybe both at once. That is the genius of Terese Taylor, a song writer and musical artist who uses her lyrics to paint sharp, steel cut images of life that upon closer inspection can be ambiguous. The same goes for her music. Is it rock, folk, country, or punk…or something that is simply Terese Taylor, best enjoyed without analysis?

Wonderfully epic debut from this Spain-based group that has already gone down as one of 2014's best albums in my mind. This is symphonic prog rock/metal that sounds influenced by stuff like Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Transatlantic, Queen, but never sounds derivative. Not only does this album rock your socks off, but it has moments where it gets almost surreal, quite a musical journey. This group should be getting a lot more notice than it is.

Chicago - Chicago XXVI: Live In Concert (1999)
Rock | 1cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Chicago Records CRD 3026 | rel: 1999 | 550Mb

Perhaps a Chicago live album sounds terribly unfashionable. Indeed, the band fell into decline in the early '90s, but by decade's end, the hit-making group known for its horn charts and high harmonies was in fighting shape, as this live set will attest. Four of the six original members are here, and they cook up some delicious sounds from the group's early history -- a stunning "Seachin' So Long," a convincing "Call On Me," a suitably dramatic "Just You 'N' Me," and a solid "Beginnings." Later material like "Hard Habit to Break" is here, but, wisely, the late '80s material was left out of the final mix. Sadly, the new material, produced by Roy Bittan, doesn't have any bite, and an appalling cover of Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher," sung by Doobie Brother Michael McDonald, closes the show. ~Allmusic

Eric Clapton - Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale)

Label: Surfdog Records Inc. | Tracks: 16 | Rls.date: 28-07-2014

Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale s influence on Clapton and many of today s artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ s legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale). With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single "Call Me The Breeze."
