Chet Atkins - RCA Country Legends (2001)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 266 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 153 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans included
Genre: Country-Pop, Instrumental Country, Country Boogie, Honky Tonk | Label: Buddha | # 74465 99836 2 | Time: 00:42:37

Chet Atkins earned and held the title of "Mr. Guitar" for 50 years before passing away in the summer of 2001. Signed to RCA in 1947, he would help define the "Nashville Sound" in the late '50s while simultaneously releasing a steady string of instrumental albums. RCA Country Legends captures Atkins on 14 wonderful tracks recorded between 1949 and 1976. Atkins recorded the self-penned single "Barber Shop Rag" with mandolinist Jethro Burns and guitarist Homer Haynes. Burns' speedy runs work as a nice counterpoint, and bring out equally inspired work from Atkins. Curiously, Atkins and his buddies even add vocals on an infectious cut titled "Boogie Man Boogie." There's a nice duet with writer and fellow guitar picker Jerry Reed on "Twitchy," and a spunky take on "Tiger Rag" worthy of Django Reinhardt. There are also a number of solo pieces, including "Petite Waltz," "Yes Ma'am," and the closer, "Liza." These cuts capture a quintessential Atkins, just a man and his guitar, handling the rhythm and lead without blinking.

Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals - Burn To Shine (1999)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 344 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 131 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans ~ 115 Mb
Genre: Alternative Pop/Rock, Blues Rock, Folk Rock, R&B, Jam Bands | Label: Virgin | # 7243 8 48151 2 7 | Time: 00:54:35

Burn to Shine presents proof positive that you can always distill the essence of rock & roll down to a solitary man alone with his guitar and conscience. It sounds inventive yet firmly rooted in the blues-rock singer/songwriter/guitarist tradition of Taj Mahal and of Neil Young and Cat Stevens at their most confessional. Harper's guitar with falsetto vocal in "The Woman in You" even suggests a Curtis Mayfield tune in the hands of Prince. "Steal My Kisses" is one of those uncluttered, radio-friendly rock shuffles that simply makes you bob your head and feel better. Even Harper's detours -- like the wobbling New Orleans shuffle with the Real Time Jazz Band, "Suzie Blue," and charred Black Sabbath metal in "Less" -- prove worth exploring. Other cameos include guitarists David Lindley and former Bob Marley sideman Tyrone Downey. Burn to Shine is a minor masterpiece that may prove to be not so minor.
