Legendary Performances of Scotto: Puccini - Madama Butterfly (Arturo Basile, Renata Scotto, Renato Cioni) [2007/1967]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 556 MB
Classical | Bravissimo | BRV 9910 | CD1:63'17; CD2:72'20

All of these are live recordings so the sound is quite variable. The standard square box contains separate soft plastic sleeves in which the cds are inserted. The advantage is that the cds are well protected (minor risk for scrapes compared to cardboard), but there is no information printed on the sleeve since it is made of plastic. There is some basic information printed on each cd (name, composer, cd #, the act/s and the date of the recording). There is also a small 24pg booklet that introduces the box including some photos as well as content description for each disc (opera, singers, time and location as well as a list of the separate tracks). I have been collecting these boxes for a while and always find it worthwhile as there are gems nicely interspersed in these collections. By Moonfish

...There are five fabulous Schubert recordings, including an edge-of-your-seat performance of Erlkönig; five marvelous Schumann recordings, including a catch-in-your-throat performance of Mondnacht; three arias from Bach's Johannes-Passion, featuring a heartbreaking "Mein teuer Heiland"; and seven excepts from several Mozart operas, ending with a delightfully charming performance of the duet from Die Zauberflöte with Quasthoff as Papageno and Montserrat Caballé as Papagena. Listeners already familiar with the German singer's lustrous voice, robust tone, agile delivery, and warm-hearted interpretations will need no more encouragement, unless they already have the original RCA recordings.

If you enjoy baroque comic opera, I recommend Il Flaminio. It is both entertaining and well performed. I tend to listen to the audio while doing other things rather than sit and watch the video performance -- which some people might or might not like. In this way I have found it highly enjoyable.

Don Giovanni, a libertine, a rake with a devil-may-care attitude, is portrayed magnificently by Teddy Tahu Rhodes in this Opera Australia production, where he first appears on stage in a costume where less is definitely more! Charismatic and sexy, Rhodes acting and singing are magnificent. His misused servant, Leporello, is played by Conal Coad, who skilfully promotes the opera's comic elements whilst delivering a thumping bass full of drama.

The quality of the repertoire and the warmth and depth of Royal's interpretations make this an album that should be of interest to any fan of modern opera. Edward Gardner leads the Orchestra of English National Opera and Crouch End Festival Chorus in intensely passionate performances that emphasize the Romantic lyricism of the music. The sound is warm and clean, with an excellent sense of presence." ~AMG

Starring Angela Gheorghiu as the celebrated French actress Adriana Lecouvreur and Jonas Kaufmann as her lover Maurizio, Count of Saxony, Cilea’s verismo drama explores celebrity, romance, jealousy, and death. The trio of sublime voices is completed by Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina as Adriana’s jealous rival, the Princess de Bouillon. David McVicar’s hit production – the first performance of the opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for more than a century – presents the life of the French actress as a blurring of the distinction between fantasy and reality.

Adam - Le Toreador (Albéric Magnard) [2005]
NTSC 4:3 (720x480) VBR | Francais (Dolby AC3, 2 ch) | 4.16 Gb (DVD5)
Classical | Kultur | Sub: English | 84 min | +3% Recovery

Adam's delightful short opera (two acts, but played here in one 84-minute block) receives a fine semi-staged mounting at the Theatre Imperial de la Musique Compiegne. A few doors, a table and chairs interspersed with the orchestra -- this production's focus is squarely on the performers, and they don't disappoint. Ghyslaine Raphanel and Franck Cassard are perhaps a trifle mature to represent love's young dream, while Matthieu Lecroart isn't the doddering cuckold the libretto describes... By Randy Buck.
