Covent Garden’s 2003 production of The Magic Flute , designed by John F. Macfarlane, directed by David McVicar, and conducted by Sir Colin Davis, is magnificent from a strictly musical standpoint. More than that, it’s vastly entertaining. The comedic elements of the story integrate far more comfortably than is often the case with Schikaneder’s high-minded (if vague) theme of a quest for enlightenment, particularly in the second act. Visually, the production is a feast, yet it doesn’t distract from the music. The intention was to maintain an 18th-century feel but to play freely with that aesthetic...

Handel - Alcina (S.Piau / C.Rousset - P.Audi) 2015 [HDTV 1080i]
AVC, 1920x1080i (16:9), 8.0 mbps, 25 fps | MP2 256 kbps, 2 ch | 3:10 | 9.9 GB
Classical, Opera | Mezzo live HD | HDTV->TS

Like Handel’s Orlando (1732) and Ariodante (1734), Alcina derives from the narrative material in Ariosto’s Orlando furioso. The story of the sorceress Alcina, an initially hedonistic, manipulative woman who later finds herself a victim of love, fits into the genre of the ‘magical opera’ with numerous magical elements, but Handel achieved considerable emotional authenticity in his characterisations. This makes Alcina one of the most deeply felt and multifaceted operas. ‘You may despise what you like ; but you cannot contradict Handel,’ said the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. As in Tamerlano, Pierre Audi based this production on the stage at the baroque theatre at Drottningholm, for which he originally developed the directing concept. The set, designed by Patrick Kinmonth, is based on the principles of perspective, with wings in the form of painted panels. The result is marvellous modern musical theatre in a historizing frame.

Don Giovanni is one of the timeless classics of all opera. Mozart's music, and the words of his great collaborator Da Ponte, are brought to life in Francesca Zambello's engrossing production from 2002 with its rich and colourful designs by Maria Bjornson. The music is memorable, dramatic and enjoyable: from the seductive solo voices of the famous 'La ci darem la mano' to the fabulous ensemble as Don Giovanni's infatuated conquests, vengeful victims and their outraged relatives join forces for justice. And retribution does finally come to Don Giovanni, a serial womanizer and a murderer, with the searing flames of Hell ready to engulf him. Simon Keenlyside heads the outstanding cast, conducted by renowned Mozart expert Charles Mackerras.

The first performance and recording in modern times of the 1845 version of Donizetti's Don Pasquale, whereby the role of Norina is given to a mezzo-soprano. Recorded live in June 2010 in the monumental setting of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. Along with the transposition of key of some sections of the opera, this performance presents the alternative finale that was adopted at the time by the French prima donna Pauline Viardot, namely, a rondo in waltz time taken from 'The Maid of Artois' by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe. The opera is sung in Italian, with subtitles and booklet notes in both Italian and English. .

The magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece, in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Soprano Hibla Gerzmava faces the operatic hurdle of singing all three heroines—each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score.

The opera is not quite on the level of the best known examples of Donizetti opera buffa, L'Elisir or Don Pasquale, but it has its charms, and the performances are expert. Serra was a fine coloratura and the men are all practiced performers in this genre. The production is apt and not overdone. Not indispensable, but entertaining.

Piollet, Uria-monzon, Alagna, Poplavskaya, Schrott - Bizet: Carmen (2011)
Classical | Bluray-rip 720p | Audio: French | Subtitles: Francais, English, Deutsch, Espanol, Catalan, Korean, Chinese | Run time: 155 mins | 7.36 GB
AVC, MKV 1280x720 (16:9) 29.97fps, 5998kbps | AC3, 48000Hz, 6ch, 640kbps

Musically, the production is excellent. Béatrice Uria-Monzon is a smart…Roberto Alagna is in excellent voice, too, offering honeyed tones that never disguise his passion or his potential for violence…Erwin Schrott is an impressively self-confident Escamillo…The other roles are well handled-and Marc Piollet and the orchestra provide a high-contrast palette, with plenty of detail and vitality. Sound is first-rate, as is clarity of the picture; and the patient and luxurious camerawork avoids the hyperactivity that mars so many opera videos these days. All in all, then, a very good Carmen… (Fanfare)

Here from the iconic Verona arena is Charles Gounod’s masterpiece Roméo & Juliette, performed there for the first time since 1977. This new production was entrusted to Italian director Francesco Micheli, making his arena debut, who opted for a personal, highly original version: “An arena within the Arena, like a blood-red Elizabethan theatre. A senescent world that will not let its own children live.”
