If Daniel Barenboim is not the world's greatest living classical musician he is certainly the most versatile. In a career spanning more than 50 years, his name is attached to many of the celebrated recordings of opera, symphony, small ensemble and piano solo. With the later half of his career marked by distinction at the podium, one may forget that he is still an accomplished concert pianist. Here we are treated to both talents as Barenboim conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin and plays all five of Beethoven's piano concerti...

Angela Hewitt - Bach: The Art of Fugue (2014)
Classical | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:29:29 | 214 MB
Label: Hyperion | Release Year: 2014

Even though Angela Hewitt's repertoire is quite extensive and diverse, encompassing the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern eras, her true specialty is the music of J.S. Bach, which she has recorded almost exclusively for Hyperion since the 1980s. With this recording of The Art of Fugue, Hewitt completes her long-running series of piano renditions of the solo keyboard works, and while not everyone is convinced that Bach composed this study of fugal techniques for the keyboard, Hewitt's performance is credible and satisfying. She controls the often unwieldy counterpoint by regarding the lines as if they were vocal parts, and her phrases are shaped by natural breathing points, as well as the different emotional qualities she brings to each fugue and canon. The Art of Fugue can be daunting for both performer and listener, because its persistent tonality of D minor and monothematic material can be quite tedious in the wrong hands. Fortunately, Hewitt fights boredom by infusing the music with the full range of expressive and technical possibilities at her disposal, and her full performance has the nuances and variety of her recordings of the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Partitas. Just as this masterpiece was the culmination of Bach's thinking on the subject of the fugue, it is a fitting conclusion to Hewitt's worthy service to the composer and a high point in her catalog.

Charlotte Church - Back To Scratch (2010)
Classical, Pop | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 47 min | 109 MB
Label: Dooby Records | Rel: 2010

Having an empirically good singing voice must be a terrible burden at times. The expectation is that you can sing anything and make it beautiful; any daft lyric, any stunning classic, anything from Wagner to N-Dubz. If you’ve got The Voice, you can make it shine. Back to Scratch is an album that works best in fragments. There are songs which hark back to Charlotte’s teenage years, spent belting out arias and show tunes in front of an orchestra, and there are more modest songs with ukuleles and mandolins – We Were Young is a particularly lovely example. There are fun songs with light lyrics and deep songs with purple lyrics. There’s even a song – Ruby – which has been recorded to sound like a dusty old jazz 45. You might love all of it, but possibly not in one sitting.

Mozart's genius in setting to music Da Ponte's comic play of love, infidelity and forgiveness marks Così fan tutte as one of the great works of art from the Age of Enlightenment. Nicholas Hytner's beautiful production for the Glyndebourne Festival in 2006, with its sure touch and theatrical know-how, lives up to its promise to be 'shockingly traditional', while Iván Fischer teases artful performances from an outstanding international cast of convincing young lovers.

La Vecchia, Orchestra Sinfonica Di Roma - Clementi: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 (2013)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 273 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Naxos | Catalog Number: 8573071

Muzio Clementi was ‘The Father of the pianoforte’, a performer, teacher, publisher and manufacturer of pioneering importance. But in addition to the works for piano, he also wrote a series of symphonies which, along with Cherubini’s D major Symphony (Naxos 8557908), are the only works by an Italian composer to stand comparison with the great Viennese symphonies of the time. Colourful, characterful and atmospheric, these important works show the influence of Haydn, but also, in their orchestral richness, of Beethoven and Schubert.

Schwarz, Seattle Symphony - Pfitzner: Symphony In C; Schumann: Konzertstuck For 4 Horns (2012)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 304 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Naxos | Catalog Number: 8572770

The musical expression of German Romanticism is the theme of this disc. The trajectory of Schumann’s Konzertstück, Op. 86, written for four horns and orchestra, goes from heroism to introspection. Two of his Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13, were orchestrated by no less a figure than Tchaikovsky, while Albert Parlow orchestrated four of Brahms’ most exciting Hungarian Dances. Mendelsssohn’s Overture to his Ballad Opera Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde (Song and Stranger) embodies classical virtues. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz for string quartet has been vibrantly orchestrated by Gerard Schwarz. Hans Pfitzner, one of the last representatives of the movement, is represented by his concise, melodic Symphony in C major.

This production of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” was recorded during the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s great tour to Japan in 1993. Directed by Götz Friedrich and conducted by Jiří Kout, this interpretation of the adulterous love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Isolde was a great success. Wagner’s composition of “Tristan und Isolde” was inspired by his love affair with Mathilde Wesendonck and the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer.
