"...a commanding performance of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy... Brendel's playing of the slow movement of No. 5 was for me one of the high spots of his set, for its measured calm is perfect..." --Gramophone

Lahti Sinfonia Ensemble - Englund - Piano Quintet; String Quartet (2005)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 228 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Bis | Catalog Number: 1197

Einar Englund's music might not be as deeply original as that of his elder countryman Sibelius, but it is wonderful, beautifully made music nonetheless. The Piano Quintet dates from 1941. It was Englund's graduation exercise, and it attracted the favorable attention of Sibelius himself. Already you can hear the qualities that characterize all of Englund's music: the late-Romantic, Russian-leaning sound of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, the clean lines, tight formal control, and memorable melodic ideas.

Handel’s second opera for the so-called “rival queens,” Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, was Admeto, which had its premiere in 1727. Their purported rivalry—created more by the public than by the singers themselves—resulted most famously in the cat fight parodied by John Gay in his Beggar’s Opera of the same year. The operas Handel wrote for these reigning divas are as musically brilliant as any of his other works. But as a result of his attempts to structure dramas that would give absolutely equal value to two leading ladies, the rival-queen operas are dramatically problematic and strain credulity at times, Admeto not excepted.

Ben Johnson, James Baillieu - Britten: The Canticles (2013)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 178 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Signum U.k. | Catalog Number: 317

As part of the celebration Britten's Centenary in 2013, this new recording presents Britten's five Canticles, performed by tenor Ben Johnson with James Baillieu accompanying. Johnson describes his attraction to these works in his self-penned notes for the disc: "Each is deep with meaning or subversion, a trademark of Britten’s music to a modern audience. They are song, opera, cantata and chamber music, and so they correspond with the most delicate of intimacy and to the most effective of grand gesture … In his biography of Britten, Humphrey Carpenter points out the close links between the Canticles and Britten’s operas. This answers in part their difference from the ‘usual’ song repertoire: their religious flavour (a stronger taste in some than others) mixed with the circumstances of their composition make for a unique strand in Britten’s output."

King, Gabrieli - Brahms: Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio (1993)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 299 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Hyperion | Catalog Number: 66107

Among the most cherished of all chamber works, the Quintet was written after Brahms visited the ducal court of Meiningen and heard Richard Mühlfeld, whom he considered one of the greatest woodwind players he had ever heard. It is a heartfelt work, and seems to sum up Brahms's life, with a mood of resignation-without-bitterness prevailing. This is one of Brahms's finest achievements.

Beethoven - String Quartets Op.18 No.4, Op.9 No.1, Op.131 (Juilliard String Quartet) [2008/1975]

The performance is certainly first rate, but (unlike the previous reviewer) I found the camera work coming between me and the music much of the time. Many camera changes and self-conscious panning and zooming do not add to the music. The ideal recording, for me at least, would involve a minimum of close ups, include all four performers in frame almost all the time, and little montage or heavy-handed editing. This recording calls attention to the camera placement and movement, whereas the best editing should generally go unnoticed, without artiness, without calling attention to itself. By Salsonero

Marti, Nigito, Capella Tiberina - Mancini: 12 Recorder Concertos (2012)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 2 CDs | Full Scans | 576 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Brilliant Classics | Catalog Number: 94324

Here's a second release from Brilliant Classics of the Neapolitan musician Francesco Mancini (1672–1737), a leading light in his city's culture of composition and education as director of the Conservatorio di S Maria di Loreto, maestro of the Royal Chapel and composer of 29 operas and more than 200 cantatas. His modern reputation largely rests on his recorder sonatas (available on 94058); the new release extends our knowledge of that cheerful aesthetic to his recorder concertos, in similarly sprightly, periodinstrument performances by young musicians with a background in this repertoire.

This is chamber music written by an 18th century Italian composer who may or may not have been an ancestor of Frank Zappa. The younger Zappa discovered the music at the music library at the University of California at Berkeley and programmed it into his Synclavier. The result is pleasant-enough European classical music with an electronic twinge -- in the same category as Switched-On Bach.

When it comes to Mozartian perfection on the opera stage, one needn’t always seek it in Milan, Vienna, Salzburg or New York! At the Sferisterio Opera Festival in the centralltalian city of Macerata, a rapt audience was treated to a production of Don Giovanni ..that will enter the annals of opera (ForumOpera.com). This magnificent reading of Mozart’s timeless masterpiece sweeps the viewer into a libertine, 1B’h-century society dominated by sensuality and erotic impulses. They are acted out on the stage’s main prop, a large, unmade bed, not only by Don Giovanni, but also by justabout everyone eise in the .. nearly faultless cast” (ForumOpera.com). ln his role debut as the title hero, lldebrando D’Arcangelo is .. incandescent” (Gazzetta di Parma) and “doesn’t do Don Giovanni; he is the Don. Unsurpassable” (24 Ore).

Bach - Motets BWV 225-231, Cantatas BWV 50 & 118 (John Eliot Gardiner) [1982]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 431 MB
Classical | Erato | 2292-45979-2 | CD1:55'57; CD2:45'31

Although conductors invariably include the six great motets of Bach (BWV225-230) in recordings of these works, they seldom if ever seem to agree which if any other of Bach's motets to perform with them. John Eliot Gardiner very sensibly goes for the lot, adding Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren (BWV231) and the little-known Der Gerechte kommt um which does not even have the benefit of a Schmieder number. As well as these, Gardiner also includes two short pieces which belong, at least nominally, to the cantata category, BWV50 and BWV118. In the case of the latter there is much justification for doing so for it's a single movement choral piece in motet style written for a funeral in about 1736 and revised for a performance around 1740. Here we have what sounds to me like a compromise; in other words the horns, cornetto and sackbuts of the first version (possibly intended for an open air occasion), with the strings and woodwind of the second. This may be explained in the texts, none of which has been included with my review copy...
