Sol Gabetta - Prayer (2014)
Classical | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:00:06 | 138 MB
Label: Sony Classical | Release Year: 2014

In every regard this is an outstanding CD. The recording quality is impressively clear yet warm, the orchestral playing well-boned and incisive, and the repertoire extremely varied. Sol Gabetta shines at every turn. Her technical command is absolute – as a pupil of Monighetti and Geringas, the legacy of Rostropovich seems firmly in place. More importantly, her nuance on shaping phrases is tasteful and expressive, and her sense of line always follows for a forward impetus in the music. Her impassioned playing of Respighi Adagio con variazioni fully exploits the music’s lyrical aspects, while Dvorak’s Waldesruhe is particularly evocative, and she brings a sense of rustic verve to the same composer’s Rondo, again delivered with impeccable assurance.

Verdi - Les vêpres siciliennes (Paolo Carignani) (2011)

Classical | OPUS ARTE | Sub: English, French, German, Spanish

Les vêpres siciliennes, like the similarly epic Don Carlos, was conceived as a grand opéra for Paris and is driven by the tensions between private passions and public politics. Originally set during Sicily’s 13th-century uprising against French rule, in Christof Loy’s staging for the Netherlands Opera the action is transposed to a 1940s world of sudden violence and shadowy double-dealing. Imaginatively cast and idiomatically conducted, the performance presents this magnificent score in its entirety, including the allegorical ballet The Four Seasons.

Charlotte Church - Charlotte Church
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC: 260 MB | Full Artwork: 97 MB | 5% Recovery Info
Label/Cat#: Sony Classical # SK 89003 | Country/Year: Europe 1999
Genre: Classical, Pop | Style: Classical, Vocal, Ballad

"Charlotte Church's debut album Voice of an Angel won a large crossover audience -- an audience much larger than the average opera record gets, let alone a record made by a 12-year-old. (...) Yes, "Just Wave Hello" already sounds dated, but the rest of the record boasts accomplished, professional (albeit mainstream) production and arrangements and, lest we forget, a very gifted, endearing vocalist called Charlotte Church. She has a sweet, pure soprano voice that will charm and win over listeners who don't consider themselves opera fans. Whether it wins opera fanatics is another matter entirely, but this album wasn't made for them anyway."

Rademann, AAM Berlin - C. P. E. Bach: Magnificat (2014)

On April 9, 1786, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach conducted a charity concert in Hamburg featuring three of his finest and most representative works: the Symphony Wq 183/1, the Magnificat (written in 1749 in the hope of succeeding his father as Cantor in Leipzig) and his stupendous 'Heilig' for double choir, of which he wrote, "It will be my swan song of this kind, and will serve to ensure that I shall not soon be forgotten after my death."

Katherine Jenkins - Sacred Arias (2008)
Pop, Vocal, Classical | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 48 min | 112 MB
Label: Decca | Rel: 2008

Katherine Jenkins is one of classical music's breakout stars who's managed to gain mass popularity, and this album sees her back in territory that's not only comfortable for her, but also for a large audience. Plenty of the material, like "Silent Night" and "Abide with Me," for instance, is quite familiar, although Jenkins certainly does them justice -- this isn't filler. The inclusion of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (albeit in a gorgeous, gauzy version) might be a little baffling, since, in spite of its title, it's not exactly sacred, but she does give a nod to gospel on "Down in the River to Pray." Apart from the pieces that are more hymns and carols, there's also a smattering of classical material, with "Agnus Dei" and "Panis Angelicus" as standouts. It's a decidedly choral album, with some excellent arrangements, and Jenkins truly does shine. It's not just an album for those with deep spiritual beliefs, but one that manages to straddle the boundaries between classical, sacred, and popular, performing a tricky balancing act quite adroitly. This will enhance her stature, without doubt, both critically and commercially.

Because Beethoven's symphonies have been played many different ways, from conventional modern versions with full-scale symphony orchestras to historically informed performances on period instruments, listeners should try several sets to get a clear idea of what suits them. Of the mainstream style of interpreting Beethoven, Otto Klemperer's approach is one of the most widely admired, and his EMI recordings of the nine symphonies have become legendary, representing the serious, rigorous, and clear-eyed treatment that he generally brought to classical music, but especially to these masterpieces...

Hérold - La fille mal gardée (Frederick Ashton) (2009)
BluRay | BDMV | MPEG-4 AVC Video / 1080i / 29,970 fps | 112 min | 32,3 GB
Audio1: LPCM Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 2304 kbps / 24-bit
Audio2: LPCM Audio / 5.1 / 48 kHz / 6912 kbps / 24-bit
Classical | Label: OPUS ARTE

Ever since it’s triumphant premiere in January 1960, Frederick Ashton's La fille mal gardée has been esteemed as one of his happiest creations. This is a charming piece, elegantly performed, a village love affair set in the idyllic Constable landscape of Ashton's imagination. Marianela Nuñez and Carlos Acosta would be show-stoppers in almost any suitable role, but as Lise and Colas they are superb. William Tuckett and Jonathan Howells, in the comic roles of Simone and Alain respectively, are every bit as arresting, both displaying a certain genius for knockabout. The luminously colourful Osbert Lancaster designs, together with the vitality of The Royal Ballet’s dancing and vibrant playing from the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House under the baton of Anthony Twiner, serve to augment the harmless good fun at which Ashton excels.
