Franz Schubert - String Quintet in C major D 956; Rondo in A major for Violin and String Quartet D 438
L'Archibudelli & Smithsonian Chamber Players - Performed on Stradivarius Instruments
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC: 334 MB | Artwork | 5% Recovery Info
Label/Cat#: Sony Classical "Vivarte" # SK 46669 | Country/Year: Europe 1991
Genre: Classical | Style: Classical Period

"Don't be fooled: the period instruments are no gimmick. This is an exquisite rendering of the D956, full of brooding tenderness in the Adagio and of delightful energy in the other movements. It is not as slick or polished as some other recordings (e.g. the Alban Berg Quartet's EMI, which I would also highly recommend), and the recording is crystal clear, i.e. unforgiving. The result may not be to everyone's taste, but I have never heard a more satisfying version of this work. Shame on Sony for letting it lapse from their catalog!"

Rossini - Mosè in Egitto (Roberto Abbado) (2012)

Audio2: Italian / DTS-HD MA 5.1 / 48 kHz / 3857 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
Classical | OPUS ARTE | Sub: English, Francais, Deutsch

This thought-provoking, modern-day interpretation of Rossini’s “Mosè in Egitto” sets the scene for superior music-making at the prestigious Rossini Festival in Pesaro. For conductor Roberto Abbado, the transposition of the action to the present day releases the energy of Rossini’s music. At his disposal is a cast of top-quality vocalists such as the “refined bel canto artist” (Bresciaoggi) Sonia Ganassi as Elcia, and the “outstanding” Dmitry Korchak as the Pharaoh’s son, two lovers fatefully drawn into the political turmoil and catastrophes of their time. Also among the protagonists are the “thoroughly brilliant” (DeutschlandRadio Kultur) baritone Alex Esposito as Faraone and, in his Rossini Festival debut, young, full-bodied bass Riccardo Zanellato as Moses. Conductor Roberto Abbado “inspired his musicians to deliver a spectacular performance” (Salzburger Nachrichten).

Franz Schubert - Andreas Staier - The Late Piano Sonatas
2xCD | EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC: 354 MB | Artwork | 5% Recovery Info
Label/Cat#: Teldec "Das Alte Werk" # 0630-13143-2 | Country/Year: Germany 1997
Genre: Classical | Style: Classical Period

"Purely from a historical performance viewpoint, there is much of interest here: Staier plays on an 1825 Johann Fritz four-pedalled fortepiano. (...) Very much a disc worth hearing, then, and one that will surely complement some treasured modern instrument performances of these works." ~musicweb-international

Stephen Whittington - Music for Airport Furniture (2013)
Contemporary Classical | Cold Blue Music CB0038 | 2013 | 22:47 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Full Scans | Various File Hosts | 129 MB
Zephyr Quartet

Music for Airport Furniture is a gorgeous minimalist work in which a string quartet broods on limited harmonic material; occasionally, a hint of melody ruffles its slow-moving and placid (but is it really?) surface. It doesn’t take much imagination to hear Whittington’s (b. 1953) description of the emotions associated with airports mirrored in this work, which is nearly monotonous but never boring, given the sensuousness of the harmonies. Imagine Bernard Herrmann crossed with Morton Feldman (Bernard Feldman? Morton Herrmann? Burton Mannfeld?), and you’ll get the general idea. ... It’s a beautifully creepy way to spend 23 minutes.

Tchaikovsky - The Sleeping Beauty (Matthew Bourne) (2013)
BluRay | BDMV | MPEG-4 AVC Video / 39345 kbps / 1080i / 29,970 fps | 158 min | 44,7 GB

Audio2: DTS-HD MA 5.1 / 48 kHz / 3933 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
Classical | Label: Deutsche Grammophon

Matthew Bourne’s SLEEPING BEAUTY sees the choreographer return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of the composer’s ballet masterworks that started in 1992 with Nutcracker! and, most famously, in 1995, with the international hit Swan Lake. Bourne takes this date as his starting point, setting the Christening of Aurora, the story’s heroine, in the year of the ballets first performance; the height of the Fin de siècle period when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination. As Aurora grows into a young woman, we move forwards in time to the more rigid, uptight Edwardian era; a mythical golden age of long Summer afternoons, croquet on the lawn and new dance crazes. Years later, awakening from her century long slumber, Aurora finds herself in the modern day; a world more mysterious and wonderful than any Fairy story!

Genre: Classical | Label: Naive Classique

What I do know is that it is her secret. I have dived deep into her repertory, her arrangements, her harmonic universe and her story too. this project is about offering her the voice of my cello, supported and accompanied by the multi-faceted musicianship of bruno fontaine, and the infinite poetry of laurent Kraif’s sounds. Perhaps if I abandon myself to her, she will take me to the secret links between her and the composers she loved above all else."

Myroslav Skoryk - Carpathian Concerto, Diptych, Violin Concerto No. 7, Cello Concerto (Pilatyuk, Kazakov, Odessa Philharmonic, Earle)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 306 Mb
Label:Naxos - Date:2014

Myroslav Skoryk holds the title of People’s Artist of Ukraine and is one of his country’s outstanding composers. Both the Cello Concerto and the Seventh Violin Concerto combine bittersweet lyricism with explosive dynamic contrasts. With its swinging rhythms and folk-music pungency the Carpathian Concerto is one of Skoryk’s most engaging and popular works. The pensive Melody for strings propelled him to the forefront of Ukrainian music, while the slapstick in his transcription of Paganini’s Caprice No. 19 reveals the composer’s humorous side. These live recordings were made at Myroslav Skoryk’s 75th anniversary concerts in Odessa.

Daniel Jones - Complete String Quartets (repost with CD 2 last track OK)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 2 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 733 Mb
Label:Chandos - Date:1997

Impressive and ultimately accessible 20th Century quartets by Welsh composer Daniel Jones (1912-1993) performed with absolute grip and certainty by the Delme ensemble. What is most remarkable in Jones is the wide dispersion of his musical intellect. The seemingly natural variety of his compositional thinking and the depth of his concentration are staggering. And perhaps this is the best way to describe these eight works: complex "concentrations." While not paralleling contemporary downlanders like Bax, Bridge or Simpson, yet venturing much further than the prototypes of Prokofiev, Shostakovich or Bartok, but eschewing ...........

Label/Cat#: EMI # 7243 5 73034 2 2 | Country/Year: Europe 1998, 1980's
Genre: Classical | Style: Romantic

One of the most versatile musicians on the planet, André Previn has amassed considerable credentials as a jazz pianist, despite carving out separate lives first as a Hollywood arranger and composer, and then as a world-class classical conductor, pianist, and composer. Always fluid, melodic, and swinging, with elements of Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, and Horace Silver mixed with a faultless technique, Previn didn't change much over the decades but could always be counted upon for polished, reliable performances at the drop of a hat...
