Adam - Le Toreador (Albéric Magnard) [2005]
NTSC 4:3 (720x480) VBR | Francais (Dolby AC3, 2 ch) | 4.16 Gb (DVD5)
Classical | Kultur | Sub: English | 84 min | +3% Recovery

Adam's delightful short opera (two acts, but played here in one 84-minute block) receives a fine semi-staged mounting at the Theatre Imperial de la Musique Compiegne. A few doors, a table and chairs interspersed with the orchestra -- this production's focus is squarely on the performers, and they don't disappoint. Ghyslaine Raphanel and Franck Cassard are perhaps a trifle mature to represent love's young dream, while Matthieu Lecroart isn't the doddering cuckold the libretto describes. That said, the trio throw themselves into the fun with gusto and fine musicianship -- the variations on "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman," that French version of our old friend, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," are the score's highlight, used to ironic effect here, and show the cast decorating away at their formidable best. Special mention, too, is due the hilarious subtitles -- perhaps the worst I've even seen. More errors than would seem humanly possible; the question is if the translator lacked fluency in French or English (or both)??? Adam's ceaseless flow of melody still delights; perhaps it's time to dust off more of his vast output for 21st century audiences. If you're fond of comic opera, this DVD's high-spirited, refreshing, and most worthwhile. By Randy Buck.

EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 241 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Linn Records | Catalog Number: 420

Young flautist Katherine Bryan is rapidly establishing her place as one of Britain’s bright musical stars of the future. For her second recording on Linn, the in-demand concerto soloist performs a selection of 20th century concertos plus Debussy’s Syrinx and Frank Martin’s Ballade. The Flute Concerto by American composer Christopher Rouse is among his most successful and widely performed works since its debut in 1994. Rouse’s concerto calls for astonishing pyrotechnics for both the flute and the orchestra; Katherine is able to showcase the sheer quality of her technique and her playing.

Karl Jenkins, according to several reckonings, is the most often performed active classical composer. He is admired and reviled in equal measure, and there is no sense in trying to reconcile those camps here. Instead one can look to the appealing factors in Jenkins' earlier music and ask in what way they are present here. Jenkins is a populist, tonal composer, but he has little in common with the likes of John Rutter. His works are large, even monumental, combining a collection of Romantic British moves with influences from world music, and uniting it all with a common theme and set of musical devices...

Matthias Bamert, London Mozart Players - Contemporaries Of Mozart - Myslivecek: Symphonies (2004)
X Lossless Decoder | Flac (Tracks + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 245 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Chandos | Catalog Number: 10203

Josef Myslivecek dropped out of university at the age of sixteen, and along with his twin brother became an apprentice to the family millers’ business. In 1758 both became journeymen, and in 1761, master millers. It was soon after this that Myslivecek decided to devote himself to music. He studied organ and composition and in 1763 left Prague for Venice where he studied operatic composition. He immediately became known as ‘Il Boemo’ (The Bohemian) because his name was impossible for the Italians to pronounce. Myslivecek’s first opera was staged in 1766 and a further opera was produced a year later for the birthday of the King of Naples, but despite this early success and the enormity of his output (which included concertos, a quantity of chamber music, some forty-five symphonies, oratorios and nearly thirty operas), Myslivecek died in abject poverty, in Rome, at the age of fifty-four.

Musically, the production is excellent. Béatrice Uria-Monzon is a smart…Roberto Alagna is in excellent voice, too, offering honeyed tones that never disguise his passion or his potential for violence…Erwin Schrott is an impressively self-confident Escamillo…The other roles are well handled-and Marc Piollet and the orchestra provide a high-contrast palette, with plenty of detail and vitality. Sound is first-rate, as is clarity of the picture; and the patient and luxurious camerawork avoids the hyperactivity that mars so many opera videos these days. All in all, then, a very good Carmen… (Fanfare)

Timothy Roberts, His Majesties Sagbutts And Cornetts - Andrea Gabrieli: Missa Pater Peccavi, Motets (2007)
EAC Rip | Flac (Tracks + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 256 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Helios | Catalog Number: 55265

The uncle of the great Giovanni Gabrieli, Andrea Gabrieli is often overshadowed by his nephew, yet he was one of the greatest and most approachable composers of the High Renaissance. Late in his life Andrea composed a Mass for four choirs, but most of his music requires only relatively modest forces; yet it has all the colour, imagination and emotional immediacy that we associate with the best Venetian art of the 16th century. In 1562 Andrea formed a lasting friendship with Lassus while visiting Germany, and the music of Lassus can be seen to be an important influence on his own.

Kate Telfer, Gough, Royal Holloway Choir, Britten Sinfonia - Korvits: Kreek's Notebook (2013)
EAC Rip | Flac (Tracks + cue + log) | 1 CD | Full Scans | 252 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Hyperion | Catalog Number: 67968

The Choir of Royal Holloway have proved themselves as inspirational performers of contemporary Baltic music through their previous recordings. The main work on this fascinating album is based on Estonian folk hymns, an unusual variant of folk melodies, collected in the early twentieth century for the first time by Cyrillus Kreek, who was the Estonian equivalent of Bartók or Grainger. Most of these religious folk songs were originally eighteenth-century Lutheran hymns which have been passed across generations and embellished with elements of secular folk-singing. During the Soviet regime, the singing of these religious songs was forbidden and this cultural genre was all but forgotten. By the end of the twentieth century fresh light could be shone on these folk collections, and Tõnu Kõrvits (born 1969) was particularly struck by the fresh possibilities and newly discovered meanings of folk hymns. In writing Kreek’s Notebook Kõrvits pays homage to Cyrillus Kreek while presenting a contemporary view of folk hymns. Although there is a dramatic unity to this eight-movement work, there is much diversity in timbre and scoring. The effect is improvisatory in the creative ornamentation of the vocal lines, and suffused with dreamy textures that bring to mind the great tradition of Eastern European choral writing.

Boris Tishchenko - String Quartets (complete)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 3 Cd, Covers | 804 Mb
Label:NorthernFlowers - Date:2011

Boris Tishchenko's music style and composing manner shows him to be a typical representative of the Leningrad composers' school. He was very much influenced by music of his teachers Dmitri Shostakovich and Galina Ustvolskaya, turning these influences in his own way. He tried to use some experimental and modernist ideas like twelve-tone or aleatoric techniques, but was much more attached to the native traditions of his homeland. He demonstrated a kind of originality, scoring his Second Cello Concerto for 48 cellos, 12 double-basses and percussion (1969). Ten years later, however, he re-orchestrated it for a more practical combination.

Jonathan Harvey - Body Mandala / Timepieces / Tranquil Abiding / White as Jasmine / ... towards a Pure Land
Anu Komsi / BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - Ilan Volkov & Stefan Solyom
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC: 319 MB | Artwork | 5% Recovery Info
Label/Cat#: NMC # NMC D141 | Country/Year: UK 2007
Genre: Classical | Style: Contemporary

British composer Jonathan Harvey has all the credentials of a classic modernist, and while his music would never be described as making the slightest concession to the New Accessibility of the late 20th century, the attractive, colorful surfaces of his work coupled with unerringly visceral intuitive development makes him a composer who can appeal to more than just hardcore new music aficionados. (...) The BBC Scottish Symphony, led by Ilan Volkov, plays with a confident mastery of the demanding scores and a sensitivity to their mercurial shifts and transformations. NMC's sound is clean, detailed, and present. (The composer recommends that listeners take a pause between the pieces, to surround each with a cleansing silence.)

Redesigned since it was first seen at the London Coliseum in 2011, Deborah Warner’s elegant and untricksy production of Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance transferred last autumn to the Metropolitan Opera. Offering as it does a beautifully detailed and sensitively characterised reading of the piece, Chekhovian in atmosphere and period, it merits a warmer critical reception than it has received on either side of the Atlantic.

Il Prigionier Superbo is a three-act opera seria with six characters — two kings, two princes, two princesses. La Serva Padrona is a two-part comic intermezzo with two singing characters — master and servant. It was performed between Prigionier's acts when they bowed in 1733, as Naples theaters reopened after earthquake-forced closure. Prigionier vanished from the stage, but Serva Padrona grew popular, helped establish opera buffaand helped start a pamphlet war between Italian and French opera supporters in Paris... MARK MANDEL
